Ah the Power of Twitter

I’m sure I’ve mentioned my love for Twitter before (possibly not on this blog though) but for those who may have missed it I’ll catch you up…

I love Twitter.

A lot.

I love how it helps spread news and makes connections that wouldn’t have been possible without it.

I love when my favorite band or musical artist posts behind the scenes photos or information for secret shows in my area. (I actually scored two guest list spots to one such show Jukebox the Ghost had recently in NYC).

So yeah, I love Twitter.

Why mention this now though? I mean, Twitter has been prominent in the media for awhile.

The answer to this involves a story from my day. A friend and I had been planning to see our other friend Bryan Fenkart play at D-Lounge in NYC. It was going to be a late show so we weren’t planning on meeting up until around 10pm. Late this afternoon I checked my Twitter feed to see this message from @Steinway7

Won’t be performing at the D-Lounge tonight. I’m sick. Sorry everyone!

While I was sorry to hear Bryan wasn’t feeling well and would have to cancel the show, I also couldn’t help but be impressed, yet again, with the information highway that is Twitter. True, I probably would have heard the news from my friend eventually, but not everyone would have been as lucky. I doubt Bryan had the ability or inclination to contact all his friends and fans individually to let them know about this cancellation. Twitter gave him the perfect outlet to get the word out in a quick and efficient manner.

And that is just one more reason why I love Twitter.

Bands Just Wanna Have Fun

I follow a very select few bands on Twitter, but when I do it usually is because they have that extra special something that makes them worth following. I like to call it The Fun Factor. This brings us to the reason we are here tonight. We’re here to have fun. It’s why we follow you all over the state (or country) and it’s why we buy more of your merch than anyone elses and it’s why we give you more of ourselves than other bands. All of this because you are a band that knows how to have fun.

One band that I fell in love with from the first song because of this “Fun Factor” is Jukebox the Ghost. They recently released a cover of the song ‘Temptation” and this video I found of them performing it live reminded me of how fun their music is and how much fun it is watching them perform.

CMJ Starts Today

Just a quick post to remind everyone that CMJ starts today. The only thing I will be going to is Jukebox the Ghost/Stand at Bowery Ballroom. Opening for them are Zach Williams and Care Bears on Fire. The rest of the week for me has yet to be decided. You can follow CMJ through their website or on Twitter. Hope everyone has a great week.

Clijsters climbs to top, wins US Open Championship

Kim Clijsters must have been happy she came out of retirement, because she has had quite a run since her return. This comment she posted on Twitter says it all:

The fairy tale goes on – some how, I’m in the US Open final on Sunday beating both Venus and Serena along the way… am i dreaming???

No, Kim, you’re not dreaming, but it must feel that way after the splendid run you have had throughout this tournament. You had a tough draw, including both Serena and Venus Williams, but you managed to make it to the finals. And oh what a night it was.

It was a night of first. For the first time in the history of the sport, an unseeded player won a major final. Also a first was the two women involved ever facing each other. Kim Clijsters and Caroline Wozniacki gave everyone in Arthur Ashe stadium a show Sunday night when Clijsters battled her way to a 7-5, 6-3 win. The first set was tight, with both players struggling to hold serve. Each game was another epic battle, many going to deuce. Eventually Clijsters was able to take the set 7-5.

The second set was not nearly as eventfully, at least until Clijsters broke for a 4-2 lead. The players stayed on serve and Clijsters eventually served it out to take the second set at 6-3 with a spectacular display in her final game. After making her climb to the top of the charts complete she proceeded to climb to the top of the stands for a congratulatory kiss from her husband, as well as hugs from the rest of her box. With trophy in one hand and daughter Jada in the other, this is one dream Clijsters won’t want to wake up from.

Promotions in the Twitter Age

We all should have noticed by now how much Twitter has taken up of our lives. Not only do we use it as another social networking tool with friends, we also can get news and promotions information by following musical artists and news sources we want to stay connected to. LiveNation is using this in a new and interesting way, however. They are currently doing a scavenger hunt that encourages members to follow them on Twitter by offering a lawn season pass at the venue closest to the winner. I don’t know about anyone else, but this definitely persuaded me to join the ranks of LiveNation followers. I don’t have high hopes for winning, but I’ll probably continue following them regardless in the hopes there will be other promotions like this. Whatever happens it will be interesting to see just how successful this venture of theirs actually is. One thing is for certain, TweetDeck will definitely get a lot of use tomorrow.
