Happy Birthday, Neil Patrick Harris

News on Shuffle would like to wish Neil Patrick Harris a very happy birthday. NPH has been in a number of our favorite things, including Dr Horrible, Glee, and How I Met Your Mother. He has also appeared on Broadway a few times, including the revival of Cabaret and the original cast of Assassins. My favorite of these however has to be Dr Horrible. It was a low-budget internet film that grew into a cult phenomena (at least among Whedon fans). The whole cast was great, but Harris was without a doubt my favorite.

Harris has been sharing his birthday wishes with his followers on Twitter for the past week now. The list is entertaining enough to be as much a present for us as it could be for him.

Things I Want for my Birthday (6/15), Chapter 1: an iPhone 4, magical automatons, original Banksy art, and 1 million followers.

Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 2: Haunted Mansion memorabilia, an actual Muppet, the superpower to eliminate oil from water, a pony.

Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 3: a working, authentic fortune teller booth, and Danielle Staub’s sex tape – but only on Blu-Ray.

Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 4: a saltwater aquarium, rad clothes from All Saints, wood burning brick pizza oven, and Disneyland.

What I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 4: Panasonic 152″ 3D plasma TV, Red Dead Redemption for Xbox, the ability to donate blood, and NPH.com. (Correction: Errr… That was Chapter 4.1.)

Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 5(ish): Giant labyrinth hedge maze, many lengthy massages, an Immunity Idol from Survivor, and socks. (Changed my mind. Instead of socks, I want a three bedroom loft in SoHo.)

Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 7: a goose that lays gold eggs for Easter, map to One-Eyed Willie’s treasure, lifetime supply of Tums

Things I Want for my Birthday, Chapter 8: A rolla bolla, VIP seats to the US Open, this skill: http://tiny.cc/77gtw and a spider monkey.

This morning he posted that CBS got him the Idol he asked for…

The CBS gang got me perhaps the coolest gift ever – the actual Immunity Idol from Survivor: China! Check it: http://yfrog.com/msar9lj

At least he got one thing off the list. As for my contribution, I’m going to try to get him that 1 million followers… either that or the spider monkey.

2010 Tony Awards – Part II

I was so excited about Memphis winning Best Musical last night that I neglected to mention some of my favorite moments from the rest of the show. I’m going to correct this error now.

First of all, I loved having Sean Hayes as a host. He was funny without being too crass and a real joy on stage. I actually considered going to see Promises, Promises based on his performance at the Tonys. Speaking of performances, they were all very good this year. I didn’t dig Fela! as much as other people seem to, but I think that was just personal preference. The rest all did a splendid job and picked great numbers to represent the best the show had to offer. Finally, Lea Michele and Matt Morrison both did a splendid job with their performances. I especially loved the choice of “Don’t Rain On My Parade” for Michele. I might just have that song stuck in my head for the next week, thanks to her. Oh, and when Morrison is done with Glee then he has to make his way for the Broadway lights (again). I would go see just about any show he was in. Broadway was made for him.

What were your favorite moments of this year’s Tony Awards? How many of the nominated shows had you actually seen? As always, feel free to sound of in the comments section below.

Glee – Journey

Warning: some spoilers contained in this blog on Glee’s season finale.

The blog hasn’t covered Glee nearly as much as it would have liked, but you can blame that on the competing time-slot with Lost and an overabundance of schoolwork. The season finale was so overwhelmingly good that I couldn’t keep silent about just how it made me feel. It was an emotional roller coaster that had already completely wiped me out by the first quarter. When Quinn’s mom showed up just in time to hear their performance… done. And their Journey medley was basically a mash-up of all my favorites by them, with the show-stopping “Don’t Stop Believing” tacked on at the end for added emotional power. Now you need to understand something – I don’t cry. That’s not to say I’m heartless, I just normally don’t get emotional over television shows. Glee’s season finale had so much heart though, well, you would have to be heartless to not feel something watching these kids lay everything out on that stage and enjoying every minute of it. I was sorry to see such an unfair treatment by the judges in giving them third place. Vocal Adrenaline’s performance of Queen’s hit “Bohemian Rhapsody” was great (as were the scenes of Quinn’s delivery that went with it) but New Directions definitely deserved second place. Having said that, it was a nice surprising twist having Sue be the one to not only defend New Directions during the judging process, but save them from extinction once they got back to school. They now get one more year to prove their worth to Principal Figgins (they’ve already proved themselves to their fans). I am confident that next season will be just as good as the first, and possibly even better.

What did you think of last night’s finale (or the season as a whole)? Sound off in the comments section below.

When Two Loves Collide

If you are a regular follower of this blog then you should notice at this point certain musical artists and television shows get more coverage than others. You probably have also figured out my love/obsession with the new series “Glee”. You have not been exposed to my obsession with Doctor Who and all things related (mostly that means David Tennant and John Barrowman).
Now usually I try to keep it as professional as possible around here. That means it’s ok to talk about something I love, but try to be objective and not, well, squee like a little girl just because I am excited about something. I also try to not use the word “I” all the time (which was doing good up till now, I think). See, there I go again. And again. It’s all downhill from here. But that’s what love does to you. It makes you forget yourself sometimes. So pardon me as I share my story: when two loves collide.
As I said before, I love “Glee” with a passion only other musical geeks could possibly understand. So when I found out one of my new favorite actors, John Barrowman, was in talks to possibly be on the show, of course there was joy. In fact, I screamed. One of those silent screams that makes people wonder if you’re having an episode of some kind. I already had heard about his upcoming appearance on Desperate Housewives (another of my favorite shows). And I knew there was a small chance he could be appearing in the American version of Torchwood. (He claims that he doesn’t know but my theory is that it just isn’t official yet). But, I digress.
So Glee. And John Barrowman. Who has a new CD and has already shown he has talent both acting and singing. Yeah, sounds good to me.

Glee hits the road for spring tour

Things we already know about the hit show “Glee”:

1) Well, it’s a hit. Ratings are good and people are talking.
2) It’s a show about a glee club. That means lots of singing and dancing.
Knowing these two things it should come as no surprise that the cast of Glee will be going on tour this spring. The list of dates is short, but they’re hitting most of the big cities (including two dates in New York City).
May 18 Phoenix, AZ Dodge Theatre
May 20 Los Angeles, CA Gibson Amphitheatre
May 21 Los Angeles, CA Gibson Amphitheatre
May 25 Chicago, IL Rosemont Theatre
May 26 Chicago, IL Rosemont Theatre
May 28 New York City, NY Radio City Music Hall
May 29 New York City, NY Radio City Music Hall

So, who else is Glee-ful over this latest announcement?

Neil Patrick Harris and Joss Whedon Both Get Glee-ful

Back in October there were rumblings of Joss Whedon directing an episode of Glee. Now we are also hearing that Neil Patrick Harris is going to be starring in an upcoming episode of the hit show. As many of you know, Neil was the star of Joss Whedon’s internet hit “Dr Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog”. What are the chances that the episode Whedon is to direct will star his former Doctor Horrible? It would definitely be a huge ratings boost for the show (not that they need it). As of yet this is just speculation on all our parts, but it would be fantastic if it turned out to be true. I guess we’ll just have to stay TUNED to find out more.

Golden Globe Awards

I only watched the first hour of the awards last night (turned it off for the season premiere of 24) but I kept track of everything through EW’s live blog and the award’s website. I have linked to the nominations and winners list for you. What I would really like to focus on is Glee’s win for Best Comedy or Musical. They had been nominated for four awards total but this was the only prize they got to take home last night. This one award is probably what amounts to the cherry on what has been a delicious sundae for them this season. ratings are good, soundtracks have been made and sold, and they have been renewed for a second season. Now they are being called the best of what comedy shows have to offer. Exciting news for both the cast and their Gleeks. Here is an interview the cast did with Spin Magazine:

This will have to tide you over until they start up again in April.

Glee Gone Until April

According to my sources (see above) Glee will be going on hiatus until April. When it comes back it will be moved to Tuesday night at 9pm… the same time as Lost. If Fox was trying to make their biggest hit come crashing down then congratulations, you have done your job. With Lost wrapping up its last season I highly doubt many viewers will be choosing to DVR it for their Glee-full guilty pleasure. Hopefully this doesn’t hurt the rating too much and it is able to continue after it loses Lost as competition.

Joss Whedon to direct episode of Glee

Joss Whedon, the guy who gave us Buffy: the Musical (one of the most popular episodes of the series) and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, is going to dip his toes in the musical pool again. This time he will be directing an episode of the musical comedy, Glee. The show has always given me the same musical campy feeling that Whedon’s work has for me, so this seems like a good move in my book. In fact, I hope he directs more future episodes as well. This isn’t to say that the show isn’t good as is, far from it actually. I just think that once in awhile Whedon could add a little something to the mix that would be quite welcome by viewers. This will also attract new viewers who may not be paying attention to the show yet, but would be hooked after following this one directed by their god of television (yes, I do believe there are people who worship him enough to watch just for this alone). It will be interesting to watch the ratings before and after this episode airs (whenever that might be). Presumably he won’t start working on this until he has a break from Dollhouse, which is his latest attempt at making fantasy television viewers squee with delight. The fact that it is currently in its second season means it is already doing better than Firefly, which has a cult following but never did well enough in the ratings to stay alive very long. Personally, I am behind in my Dollhouse viewing (just about to finish DVD of first season), but what I have seen so far I have thoroughly enjoyed. I hope it has staying power equal to his previous hits of Buffy or Angel. As with most things, only time will tell.

Glee Gives Something For Everyone

Some may have been skeptical when Glee presented itself as a “musical comedy” that it would be able to survive in network television. Even science fiction shows usually have higher hopes than the whimsical fare shows like Glee give viewers. I consider myself one of the many that are Gleeful over how well the show has done in the ratings so far though. Not only that but there have been some hits on iTunes as well. There is even talk of the first of hopefully many Glee soundtracks, which would give the public an opportunity to own all the snappy numbers that have been featured on the show so far (which range from country to hip hop and everything in between). With something to attract a whole host of people, Glee should have no trouble snagging enough viewers for a continuation of the show. Musicians everywhere, rejoice, for music has been brought amongst the masses… and it was good.
