Alyson Greenfield – Upcoming Covers EP + SXSW Appearances

Alyson Greenfield has been a busy bee these past few months. She releases her Only Silence EP 2 months ago, and is now putting the finishing touches on her long-awaited Covers EP. This will include Gangsta’s Paradise, which has been a favorite at her live shows.

She will also be making an appearance at SXSW this year on day 1 of a two-day camp the Lovely Hearts Club is setting up at Uncorked Wine Bar on March 17th. You can RSVP for that here. If you’re in the Austin area, be sure to check her out. And for NYC locals, fear not. The Covers EP will get a proper release. Details on that still to come.

CMJ Day 5 in Photos

This morning I gave you my recap of the final day of CMJ, thinking I would not be able to get around to posting photos until earliest tomorrow morning. Well, folks, I was kinda wrong there (alright, technically it’s 12:30am, but I wrote most of this before going to Muse. Just had to add labels). I’ve gotta say, I am really impressed with how on top of things I’ve been this week. The version of me that first started this blog would have just done a very short post at the end of CMJ instead of the daily recaps I ended up doing. I have enjoyed getting more of an opportunity to write about the things I love the most, and only hope I can keep doing it in the long term. So – without further ado – here is the final installment of my continuing coverage of CMJ from this week.

Tinderbox Festival A Smashing Success

Sunday, September 26, 2010 brought us the first Tinderbox Festival of what will hopefully be an annual event. The very musical day full of brilliant female performers took place at Southpaw in Brooklyn and was brought to us by New York’s own Alyson Greenfield. Alyson moved here from Alabama a few years ago, and since then she has been making quite a splash in our fair city. This latest success started when Lilith Fair announced it’s return this year. Alyson created a blog as sort of a campaign to get on the line-up. It turned out to be the start of what would be the creation of her own festival. There were many great female performers included in this first year, including Jenny Owen Youngs, Hank & Cupcakes, Jessie Murphy in the Woods, and a performance by Alyson Greenfield herself. The full list of performances was as follows:

MAIN STAGE
:
11:00pm Bitch

10:00pm Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers
9:00pm Jenny Owen Youngs

8:00pm Hank and Cupcakes

7:00pm Alyson Greenfield
6:00pm Jessie Murphy In The Woods
5:00pm Kalae All Day

4:15pm Brit & The Calvary

3:30pm Charlene Kaye and The Brilliant Eyes

UNDERGROUND STAGE:
10:3pm Larkin Grimm
9:30pm Denitia Odigie
8:30pm Maya Solovey
7:30pm Mal Blum

6:30pm Misty Boyce

5:45pm Jennifer Newman

5:10pm Lisa Jaeggi
4:40pm Lachi

4:10pm Allison Tartalia
3:30pm Lara Ewen

There were many memorable moments throughout the evening, but my favorite was probably this line from Ms Greenfield, “Casio. Get one. It will change your life forever.” I would like to add this tagline, “Tinderbox. Stick around. It will change New York forever.”

Tinderbox Music Festival

Hearing that the all-female music festival Lilith Fair was returning in 2010, Alyson Greenfield decided to start “Dear Lilith Fair 2010,” a blog dedicated to trying to get on the tour. Many readers and fellow musicians responded to the blog with excitement, and Alyson soon recognized the existence of a large community of female musicians and their fans who wanted to be part of a women-driven music festival reflecting the current landscape of diverse and emerging musical talent. Alyson then took the initiative to start a new music festival, located in New York City, to showcase female artists — both up-and-coming local artists as well as more established performers. She brought on J.D. and former singer/songwriter/producer Jennifer Newman and entertainment business affairs maven Alicia Matusheski. Tinderbox was born.

This is the story I wanted to share with you today. Alyson is a friend of mine with an awesome idea that I want to support. I have linked to the Kickstarter Fundraiser above, and I’m asking that everyone 1) donate whatever they can, and 2) tell all your friends about it and ask them to do the same. Even if you’re strapped for cash, we understand and simply ask you pass this on to someone who might be more able to help. Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
News on Shuffle

Lilith Fair Returns

Spin Magazine reports that Lilith Fair tour will return in 2010. This is the biggest girl fest the music industry has to offer us, and already there is quite a group of talented ladies lined up for the tour, which is set for summer 2010. Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow and Tegan & Sara are just some of the lovely ladies to get excited about thus far. I know one lady by the name of Alyson Greenfield (who I have mentioned on this blog before) is excited about this announcement and would love the opportunity to play with these talented female artists. She is so excited about this that she even wrote Lilith fair a song to share her enthusiasm. As I listen to my Lilly Allen station on Pandora (which is the ultimate in girl power playlists) I get excited too.

BRM CMJParties

Beyond Race Magazine will be hosting two free parties today and tomorrow at Crash Mansion. The one tonight is from 5-8pm and features Apollo Heights, Bodega Girls, Jeff the Brotherhood, and Love Language. The one tomorrow is from 4-7pm and features Army/Navy, Pete and the Pirates, Kiss Kiss, and Helado Negro. So go check out some free performances and have a few drinks.

While you’re there tonight, why not stay for the show to follow. TM Promotions is bringing you Nick Howard, Alyson Greenfield + more. Show starts at 10:30pm. Nick and Alyson are both great performers (although I am a little biased when it comes to Alyson) so it is definitely worth sticking around for.

Things To Do Tonight in New York

Hey everyone!

You have two great options tonight in terms of shows you can go to.

Option 1 is Alyson Greenfield at Banjo Jim’s on the corner of 9th Street and Avenue C, which is free. Alyson is awesome and everyone should experience her at least once. (Trust me, after you meet her once won’t be enough). Her set is at 7, which would make you only slightly late for…

Option 2, which is Stephanie Carlin, Kari Spieler , Nick Howard and Emily Hope Price at 303 Grand in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This show is brought to you be TM Promotions so I will be working doors and taking pictures for the evening. Stop by and say hi. Only $5 cover plus free PBR. What more could you ask for?

Whatever you end up doing tonight remember to have fun and stay safe. have a good weekend everyone!
