In a world where Top 40 radio seems to be somewhat less relevant than it was before (at least in my opinion) the Grammy Awards provided me with one or two pleasant surprises. The biggest and best of these was Kings of Leon taking Record of the Year over Beyonce, Black-Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift. This was an extremely competitive category this year, with Kings of Leon looking like they would be the odd man out. It honestly renewed some of my faith in the music industry to see Kings of Leon win this award. This isn’t to say the other nominees weren’t deserving. I simply mean that the music industry seems to have turned it’s back on rock music for the most part in recent years. Since this is primarily what I listen to, it has been hard to find anything on the radio that interests me. Speaking of rock music, Kings of Leon also took Best Rock Performance by a duo or group and Best Rock Song. They were nominated for Song of the Year but lost to “Single Ladies” by Beyonce. Green Day was another well-representied rock group this year, as they were nominated for three awards. Two of these were lost to Kings of Leon, but they did manage to take Rock Album of the Year, which I believe was very much deserved. 21st Century Breakdown was possibly one of the Best Albums of the Year, not just in rock but overall. Green Day was also one of the featured performers for this year’s Grammys, appearing with the cast of American Idiot to perform “21 Guns”. Other notable performances were given by Bon Jovi performing three of his hits, including one that was voted on by the fans. Out of three choices “Livin on a Prayer” won the most votes and was played as the end of his mini set. Overall the awards were too long (3.5 hours is a little much) but there were a few good moments that made it somewhat worthwhile.
Muse To Headline Coachella 2010
As if Muse wasn’t getting enough buzz in recent months, they now have something else to look forward to. They have been added as the headliner for the Saturday, April 17 date for Coachella. The festival takes place every year in California. This is in addition to a growing tour they will be on for most of this year with Silversun Pickups opening. The New York date of this tour is on March 5 at Madison Square Garden and is sold out (according to Silversun PIckups’ website).
Golden Globe Awards
I only watched the first hour of the awards last night (turned it off for the season premiere of 24) but I kept track of everything through EW’s live blog and the award’s website. I have linked to the nominations and winners list for you. What I would really like to focus on is Glee’s win for Best Comedy or Musical. They had been nominated for four awards total but this was the only prize they got to take home last night. This one award is probably what amounts to the cherry on what has been a delicious sundae for them this season. ratings are good, soundtracks have been made and sold, and they have been renewed for a second season. Now they are being called the best of what comedy shows have to offer. Exciting news for both the cast and their Gleeks. Here is an interview the cast did with Spin Magazine:

This will have to tide you over until they start up again in April.

Yula Beeri Residency – review + photos
Social Media Site Goes Pink
People all over are starting to see the potential benefits of using social media sites to help promote their organization. Lately the focus has been on strategies in using Twitter for business and promotional purposes, but Facebook has recently been put back in the spotlight for ingenuity on the part of its members. If you are one of the millions of people who log on to their Facebook page every day, you may have noticed the status updates of many of your female friends have become much more colorful. That is because these ladies are trying to help raise awareness for breast cancer. While the origin of this campaign is unknown, the results are concrete. What may have started as a small project has brought attention to Susan G Komen’s fan page and their fight against breast cancer. Good Morning America even did a feature on it, which is the link of the day here. This is the power of the internet and the good that can come from it. Who said this thing was just a fad?
Things to do in NYC this week
This week has plenty of fun events to offer for fans of live music. Tonight go check out Bryan Fenkart and special guests at Bitter End on Bleaker Street. Make sure to stick around for Richie Cannata’s Monday Night Jam. Wednesday continues Yula Beeri’s Residency at Knitting Factory, which you won’t want to miss. Thursday spend the night at Rockwood Music Hall for a great night of music, including a performance by Yula Beeri and the eXtended Family and the second night of Joey Ryan’s Residency. Top off the week on Friday with The Yummy Fur, which features members of Franz Ferdinand and 1990s.
